ARE ASPHALT SHINGLES A GOOD IDEA OR SHOULD YOU AVOID   THEM?

If you have been around the suburbs of the North America, you have probably noticed triangular roofs covered with asphalt. It is nothing strange considering asphalt is the most popular roofing choice in the United States.  Because of the title it has, we decided to write one whole article about the asphalt for roofing, its benefits or disadvantages. The main reason wait this material is so popular is its price. This American innovation is a low budget option and that is why it has become so popular in our country.

Types of asphalt shingles

Even though you would never guess, professionals know that there are two types of asphalt shingles. The difference between them is their base. Both are equally installed on houses around the US. You can split them into two categories and those are organic base asphalt shingles and fiberglass base asphalt shingles. These are made with a similar technology meaning asphalt is applied to one or both sides of the base. Sides are then completely covered in slate, stone, brick, granules or a mixture of these while the back is covered in sand, talc, mica or other “sandy” material because it prevents shingles from sticking one to another. Coatings that are applied on the surface of the rooftop have a purpose of protecting the shingle from the UV light and psychical damage, some producers even ad rubberized asphalt so that the shingles could be resistant to hail and thermal cracking

Organic asphalt shingles

This type of shingles has a base made of formerly living materials. Most manufacturers use cellulose, waste paper or wood fiber and then saturate those materials with asphalt. This becomes a water resistant combination. Besides, they also add coatings of ceramic granules and adhesive asphalt but nno matter all those upgrades, organic asphalt shingles are still prone to being damaged in a fire even though the contain more asphalt than the other type.

Fiberglass asphalt shingles

Fiberglass asphalt shingles are nothing more than upgraded version of the organic ones.  These shingles instead of formerly living things, have a base of glass fiber mat. The mat is produced from fiberglass which is mixed with urea-formaldehyde. Manufacturers add asphalt which contains minerals and that is why fiberglass asphalt shingles are waterproof and non -combustible.  They are great at dealing with fire and have a Class A rating meaning they are fire-resistant. All of this is why organic version of asphalt shingles are slowly going out of the market.

Benefits of asphalt shingles

We want to give you a full picture of asphalt as a material and it is true that it has many qualities.

Shapes and textures

Let’s start with shapes and textures. Asphalt can be designed in several ways and coated with different coatings which can improve the quality and the appearance of the roof. Shingles can be made to look like any other type of roofing.

It can be eco-friendly?

Some asphalt shingles even have an eco-friendly property. They reduce the price of excess air conditioning because they are reflective This means that the inside of your house won’t be as hot as it would be with other material.

Wind VS. Asphalt

Asphalt shingles react differently to the wind. High speed winds can pull of the entire section of asphalt roof which can be very problematic. However, If your shingles are properly nailed, sealed and treated with different finishes and coating, it can go through hurricanes as well.
